Description:

The MQ-3 Alcohol Sensor Module is a highly sensitive gas detection module designed to detect alcohol vapor in the air. It is especially optimized for ethanol and is commonly used in breathalyzer projects, alcohol detection systems, vehicle safety devices, smart monitoring systems, and Arduino-based electronics projects.

The module uses a semiconductor gas sensor that changes its resistance when exposed to alcohol vapor. An onboard comparator circuit converts this change into both analog and digital outputs, making it easy to interface with Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi, STM32, and other microcontrollers.

The MQ-3 sensor is most sensitive to alcohol and ethanol vapors, but it can also respond slightly to smoke, benzine, and some other gases. It is ideal for applications where alcohol detection is required, such as checking for alcohol in a driver’s breath, detecting alcohol in the environment, or triggering an alarm when alcohol concentration exceeds a certain level.

The module typically includes two outputs:

  • Analog Output (AO): Provides a variable voltage proportional to alcohol concentration
  • Digital Output (DO): Provides a HIGH or LOW signal when alcohol concentration exceeds a threshold set by the onboard potentiometer

The adjustable potentiometer allows you to set the detection threshold manually. When the concentration rises above the selected level, the digital output activates and the onboard LED usually turns on.

Typical applications include:

  • DIY breathalyzer projects
  • Alcohol detection systems
  • Vehicle anti-drunk-driving systems
  • Smart safety alarms
  • Industrial alcohol leak detection
  • Air quality and gas monitoring systems
  • Arduino and ESP32 projects
  • Home automation and security systems
  • Robotics and automation projects

The sensor operates from a 5V supply and requires a short warm-up period before giving accurate readings. For best performance, the sensor should be powered for several minutes before use, since the internal heater needs time to stabilize.

For your electronics projects, this module could be useful if you want to build a breathalyzer device, safety alarm, or smart monitoring system with Arduino or ESP32.
